JH English Monthly Writing Competitions – Yoyo Yu
Our JH Monthly Writing Competition continues! We’re very pleased to share poetry from our winning writers in January’s competition, ‘Celebrating the New Year’, which asked pupils to write a poem celebrating the festivities of the most special holiday of the year. We’re proud of our winners who all come from Grade 8!: Emma Wu (1st place) Yoyo Yu, George Liu, and Raymond Zhu (runners up). We welcome you to listen to Yoyo Yu as she shares her celebratory poem with Ms. Wu as well as her experience crafting her poem. We recommend our listeners to reflect on the importance of this holiday and how poetry can celebrate the special events in our lives.

Spring Festival
The snow is falling like dandelions.
When the New Year comes, those who we miss will finally get together.
Everyone will have a happy reunion dinner.
They raise their glasses to review the past and look forward to the future
Adults sit around and play mahjong
The old people eat melon seeds in the living room
Children set off colorful firecrackers
The exploding fireworks are beautiful lotus flowers spreading their petals in the air
Children also like to make snowmen
The snowmen have a red nose and big eyes, like a lovely doll
Everyone hans red fireballs under the eaves
The streets and alleys are lit up in a flash
The next morning
The tinkling knock on the door opens the first day of the New Year
People pay New Year’s greetings to the relatives of every household in the alley
The elders give red envelopes to children, just as they give them wishes of good luck
I hope our future will be bright and full of hope!
