Jane: My mom’s coming home tomorrow. Get out!
SILENT. INCOMING CALL.
Real Mom: Hey honey, why’d you call? I already told you, I’m coming home tomorrow.
Jane: Mommy please don’t hang up – there’s someone in here.
SUDDENLY, STATICY SOUNDS, MOM HANGS UP.
Real Mom: So-sorry, I can— can’t hea-….
Jane: Mom, are you still there?
KNOCKING SOUNDS INTENSIFY AND STOPS ABRUPTLY.
DIALLING SOUNDS.
S: 911, what’s your emergency?
Jane: There’s someone in my house!
S: Okay, coming right away, Jane.
Jane : *hangs up* Wait, how does he already know where I live?
Door knocks faintly.
S: Ma’am, are you in here?
*stops breathing heavily, she thinks it’s safe, so she opens the door*
EMPTY.
Jane: Hello?
*heavy walking*
SHE RUNS OFF, DIALLING THE PHONE AGAIN.
Jane: Where are you guys, you said you’d come over?
Actual Police: Sorry? You never called us…
Jane: But… I just spoke to someone. They said they were coming here…
Actual Police: Ma’am, we haven’t received any calls from your location tonight.
Jane: No… but I did call… Someone answered… They knew my address.
*sudden loud creak from another room*
Jane: Please, just send someone. There’s someone here
Actual police: Stay calm. Officers are on their way now.
Faint whisper echoing her name: Jaaane…
Suddenly a loud thud – her phone is falling.
*jane picks her phone up, loud ruckus: Please hurry…
Actual Police: Stay on the line, ma’am. Can you hide somewhere safe?
Jane: I’m going to my room…
Soft close of door.
Jane hears soft, mocking laughter coming from just outside her door.
Dispatcher : Ma’am, are you there? Are you safe?
Jane: It’s right outside… I can hear it.
Door creaks open.
Dispatcher: Hold tight. The officers should be there any minute now.
Suddenly, a chilling voice from the other side of the door, low and menacing: “You can’t hide, Jane.
*heavy breathing from jane*
Dispatcher : Jane, are you okay? Officers are almost there. Do you see anyone?
Jane:No, I… I think they’re right outside. But it’s so quiet…
*sound like fingernails on chalk* Jane…let me in – it’s cold out here…
Dispatcher: Jane, is someone trying to get inside?
Jane: Yes! They sound like my mom… but… she’s supposed to be on a flight!
Suddenly, the sound of slow, deliberate knocking echoes through the room, each knock heavier than the last.
Dispatcher: Stay where you are. Officers will be there in two minutes.
*knocking stops* Jane…don’t make me wait.
Jane: Hurry, hurry, please!
The call cuts to static, leaving Jane in darkness as the whispering voice breathes: You’re all alone now, Jane. Janneee….Jane…are you there? Are you there, Jane? I said ARE YOU THERE?
THE DOOR SLAMS OPEN WHEN JANE SCREAMS.
FOBISIA Radio Drama Challenge hosted by Wellington College Hangzhou Drama Department and Dukebox Radio Station
This year, we had the privilege of hosting a Radio Drama Challenge for the FOBISIA Drama online competitions. The aim of the challenge was for pupils to showcase their creative talents in script writing and voice acting through audio storytelling.
They had the choice between 8 genres, ranging from Comedy and Radio Advertisements to Spy Thriller, Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
We had an incredible turnout of 300 upper primary, junior and senior pupils from 19 schools across Asia taking part. Our 10 judges were extremely impressed with the amount of talent and creativity showcased in the entries.
Pupils were judged based on their scriptwriting skills, use of language, plot and originality, as well as their character creation and ability to entertain the audience.
For voice acting, pupils were judged on their expressiveness and characterisation.
Additional points were awarded for their editing abilities, by using music and sound effects to create atmosphere suited to their chosen genres.
We would like to thank our judges, the teachers and of course participating pupils who all made this challenge a resounding success and assisted in creating an enjoyable experience for all involved.
We look forward to continuing this again in future years. Watch this space!
