Piano: Disoriented notes
Rui Szy: Tsk!
Adia : Oh My GOD! What is that?!
Rui Szy: Well, I’m trying to play twinkle twinkle little star, but it sounds slightly off.
Karina enters
Karina: Slightly off is an UNDERSTATEMENT!
Adia : No offence, but I agree. Why don’t you use the Humala Piano instead, It’s much better, smoother and more long-lasting!
Rui Szy: (unsure) Wait, guys……What’s the H-H-Hamada piano?
Karina: The HUMALA piano, is a piano discovered by William Humalalangoo Thomas. In fact, his middle name was the one that started this entire story…
(Magical tingling sounds….)
Scene 2:
Karina : It all started when William was trying to find the perfect instrument . He had a big dream of trying to impress his father with the perfect instrument. He tried again and again, but time and time again he would fail. He started to venture out to the forest until he saw 3 hunters trying to kill a beautiful phoenix-like bird. With fiery eyes, as bright as the sun.
Humalalangoo bird: (caws in pain)
Hunters ( Adia and Rui Szy ) : Stop there! Quick! Get it!
Humalalangoo bird: (caws in pain)
William ( Rui Szy ) : (frantic) I must stop them! Wait….. Where are the pebbles? Oh! There they are! Quick!
Karina: In such a desperate situation, and with no choice, William uses a harp—one of his inventions—to shoot rocks at the hunters.
(Rocks hitting the hunters sound)
Hunter 1: Owww!
Hunter 2: Ouch!
Hunter 3: Owwwwww! Good lord!
Karina: And so, that’s how the Humalalangoo bird and William became friends.
2 Humalalangoo bird: (relieved) thank you William.
William: (confused) wait, w-w-what? H-h-how do you know my name?
(Adia) 2 Humalalangoo bird: Cuz I’m a Humalalangoo bird, duh!
William: Since you are so intelligent, can you teach me how to find or make the perfect instrument?
2 Humalalangoo bird: Sure! I know of a place that owns the most perfect and in-tune instrument that can ever be found!
William: can you really? Please, take me to it.
2 Humalalangoo bird: Come, follow me!
(Magical fairy dust sounds)
Scene 3:
Karina: And so, they set out on the sky, ready to find the magical place.
2 Humalalangoo bird: We’ve arrived! Get ready.
William: for wha……t
(Humalalangoo bird goes sweeping down into a dive, sound of wind can be heard)
Karina: they both land on a hard solid instrument.
William: Oh my goodness! It’s the most perfect instrument ever! And since you brought me to it, I’ll name it after you. The Humala Piano! There, how does that sound?
2 Humalalangoo bird: Fantastic! However, I cannot stay long, as my wife will be expecting me home for dinner. Goodbye, fair William!
William: Goodbye!
(Magical tingling sounds)
Scene 4:
William: Father, I have done it! I have finally completed the perfect instrument!
W Father: Really?! Please, show me.
William shows his father the piano by playing the piano beautifully.
(Karina plays the starting of Alla Turca)
W Father: Oh my goodness! That is fantastic! I am so proud of you my son, I knew you could do it! This is even better than the harp!
William: That’s all I ever wanted to hear! Thanks father!
Karina: and so, William finally fulfilled the dream of impressing his father, and the Humala piano lived to it’s name.
(We are sucked back into reality)
Scene 5:
Rui Szy: Ooh! This piano is much better! (Plays twinkle twinkle little star perfectly)
Karina: Well, that is an improvement! Make sure to get in lots of practice, at least 25 minutes a day.
Adia: I can’t tell you how true that is! Our ears are saved!
Rui Szy: Thanks for the advice guys, I better get going now, bye!
Adia, Karina: Bye!
Footsteps walking away
Karina: OMG, thank goodness the horrible sound stopped. FINALLY our ears are spared.
Adia: Which horrible sound? The piano or Rui Szy?
Karina: The piano… Obviously
Adia: So true… thank goodness!
FOBISIA Radio Drama Challenge hosted by Wellington College Hangzhou Drama Department and Dukebox Radio Station
This year, we had the privilege of hosting a Radio Drama Challenge for the FOBISIA Drama online competitions. The aim of the challenge was for pupils to showcase their creative talents in script writing and voice acting through audio storytelling.
They had the choice between 8 genres, ranging from Comedy and Radio Advertisements to Spy Thriller, Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
We had an incredible turnout of 300 upper primary, junior and senior pupils from 19 schools across Asia taking part. Our 10 judges were extremely impressed with the amount of talent and creativity showcased in the entries.
Pupils were judged based on their scriptwriting skills, use of language, plot and originality, as well as their character creation and ability to entertain the audience.
For voice acting, pupils were judged on their expressiveness and characterisation.
Additional points were awarded for their editing abilities, by using music and sound effects to create atmosphere suited to their chosen genres.
We would like to thank our judges, the teachers and of course participating pupils who all made this challenge a resounding success and assisted in creating an enjoyable experience for all involved.
We look forward to continuing this again in future years. Watch this space!
